    As Roanoke-Blacksburg’s premier professional association, the Roanoke - Blacksburg
    Technology Council (RBTC) is an essential resource for technology companies seeking
    to achieve greater success. The RBTC is a non-profit member-driven association of
    businesses and organizations in the greater Roanoke-Blacksburg region working
    together to promote the growth and success of the region's technology sector.
    Our membership includes more than 200 organizations from emerging technology
    firms to some of the largest employers in the region. The RBTC is building a technology
    community that is a catalyst for innovation, inspiration, success, and leadership within
    our region.
    We are seeking an experienced, dynamic, and hands-on person who thrives on
    creativity and results to join our small, innovative team as full-time Director of
    Communications. This person will work to celebrate the region’s success stories as well
    as raise the profile of the RBTC as the go-to professional association for the region’s
    technology community and will report directly to the President and CEO.
    Essential Functions
    • Lead and manage an overall communications strategy for the organization
    • Manage all traditional and online communications
    • Website management
    o Content management
    o Event calendar management
    o Blog about member and community success stories
    o Administer association management and member relationship software
    • Social media management
    o Maintain active presence on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.
    o Create conversations and engage members on all platforms
    o Promote RBTC events and community success stories
    o Update and utilize social media strategy
    o Monitor and report monthly analytics across all platforms
    • Graphic design
    o Basic design of RBTC communication materials, including:
    § Newsletter
    § Business cards and stationary
    § Print brochures, handouts, signage, etc.
    o Manage external graphic design needs with vendors, including:
    § Digital banners for events
    § Website graphics
    § Annual ‘Year in Review’ report
    • Member communication
    o Develop monthly Get Plugged In newsletter
    o Email campaigns for events, engagement, benefits, etc.
    o Communicate with members, gather news to celebrate successes
    o Develop regular blog posts with the President and CEO and Vice
    President of Member Engagement

    • External communication
    o Develop and manage a media and public relations strategy
    o Issue press releases, submit stories and story ideas to media partners
    o Seek to increase the notoriety of the region’s technology sector
    o Develop creative communication avenues
    o Work with members and community stakeholders to develop shared
    messaging for talent attraction
    • Events
    o Create and execute successful campaigns that drive event attendance
    o Develop all materials including programs, banners, signage
    o Develop and manage creative strategies to promote RBTC events
    o Participate in strategic brainstorming sessions to plan events
    o Coordinate and manage quarterly ‘Connect & Grow’ webinars
    o Record events and post photos/videos appropriately
    o Work with interns and volunteers as needed to accomplish event goals
    o Assist with event logistics and attendee registration
    o Survey event participants in coordination with Vice-President of Member
    • Internal Board and Staff Communication
    o Schedule and provide meeting notices to board of directors, committees,
    and related groups
    o Compile meeting packets and minutes and distribute appropriately
    o Input necessary information into association management and member
    relationship software
    o Manage voice and electronic inbound communications
    • Work alongside the President and CEO, Vice-President of Member Engagement,
    and other staff, board members, and member volunteers in the development of
    new programs, strategic planning, and the acquisition of new sources of revenue
    for the organization
    • Perform other duties as assigned

    • Ability to clearly articulate the RBTC mission, goals, and value proposition to a
    wide audience
    • Strong commitment to quality programs and evaluation
    • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with staff, members, sponsors,
    vendors, the education community, and government officials
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to research and prepare clear, concise, and well-organized reports
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team and adapt work habits
    and procedures as necessary to accommodate the organization
    • Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends
    • Must be fluent with Microsoft Office and member communication related
    • Experience with graphic design software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop,
    InDesign, etc.
    • Project management experience a plus, with excellent time management skills
    and ability to balance multiple tasks and short and long-term priorities
    Must have a Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Proven track record of
    communications excellence with a portfolio of work, at least 3-4 years experience is
    preferred. Applicants with an equivalent combination of education and experience will
    also be considered.
    Additional Requirements
    Travel throughout the Roanoke and New River Valleys will be required. Must be able to
    work from both the Roanoke and Blacksburg offices. Employee must provide their own
    transportation to the job and related meetings and events. Applicant must possess, or
    obtain by time of appointment, a valid Virginia motor vehicle operator’s license and an
    acceptable driving record. A comprehensive pre-hire background check will be made
    on all candidates who are selected for employment and may include checks of the
    following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and
    employment record. Applicant will be required to sign a release authorizing RBTC to
    obtain their background information.
