The City of Chesapeake, the third largest populated City in Virginia with over 226,000 residents, is seeking an individual with strong leadership qualities and management experience to serve as Director of the City’s Public Communications Department. Located in the heart of Hampton Roads, Chesapeake is a full-service City supported by a total operating budget of almost a billion dollars (including school funding) and a workforce of 3,100+ full-time employees.

Under the administrative direction of the City Manager, the Director of Public Communications provides strategic leadership for internal and external communications encompassing media and public relations to effectively communicate a unified City message.
§ Knowledge of

· supervisory and managerial principles and practices;
· communication technology
· understanding and translating technical subject matter and terminology;
· problem solving, collaboration, and negotiation;

§ Ability to communicate effectively, clearly and persuasively through verbal and written communication.n.
Experience and Education
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, business, marketing or a closely related field and a minimum of six years, full-time equivalent progressively responsible experience in communications or a closely related field. Four years of supervisory experience is required. A Master’s degree in a direct or closely related field is preferred.
The City of Chesapeake has established a salary range of $86,834 to $115,056+ depending upon qualifications. The City offers a highly competitive salary and benefits package.
