    The Office of University Communications at James Madison University (JMU) is accepting applications for a Media Relations Manager with a proven track record of successful story development and placement with local and regional media outlets. The successful candidate will work closely with JMU faculty and staff from across the university to identify newsworthy pitches and successfully place stories that showcase scholarship and thought leadership at JMU. Other responsibilities include responding to media inquiries, developing and implementing strategies, assisting with media monitoring and reporting on results regularly. ‬‬The Media Relations Manager will also serve as a member of the Crisis Communications Team.‬‬‬‬‬‬

    The Office of University Communications acts as a liaison between James Madison University and its many audiences. The team serves as JMU’s most direct connection to the news media and social media users and works to promote, protect and defend the reputation of the university. This position reports to the Associate Director of Communications and is responsible for managing one full-time and one part-time Media Relations staff members.

     Develop and execute a strategic plan for campus media relations, including identification of key performance indicators.
    - Regularly measure and report results of effectiveness of earned media outreach to university leadership and others.
    - Establish and maintain effective relationships with faculty, staff and administrators across campus to identify story ideas and provide counsel. Develop media training curriculum and initiate training as needed.
    - Pitch stories to media via news releases, editorials, opinion pieces, advisories, experts’ lists, video stories, social media and other tactics that advance university priorities.
    - Respond to requests from media for information and access to administrators. Manage media requests that require on-campus interaction and presence.
    - Oversee launch and maintenance of the university’s new online newsroom; ensure that the university’s subject matter expert, media hits and construction update web pages are accurate and optimized.
    - Supervise and mentor Media Relations staff by assigning work, evaluating performance and recommending professional development plans.
    - Lead strategy for the university’s media monitoring and press release distribution software.
    - Collaborate with marketing colleagues and other campus partners to use video and photos to package and pitch stories in new and interesting ways.
    - Serve as a member of the Crisis Communications Team.‬ Duties can include giving guidance, writing statements, serving as a resource for journalists and/or managing messages during emergencies and reputational crises. Also responsible for implementing inclement weather and emergency notifications.
    - Stay up-to-date on new PR systems, best practices, applications and technologies.
    - Exercise the highest level of confidentiality and discretion with sensitive issues.‪‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
    - Perform other duties as assigned.
