Bringing George Takei to Roanoke

The City of Roanoke is a diverse, inclusive community with more than 100 nationalities in its population. Roanoke prides itself on welcoming all people. In fall 2015, Mayor David Bowers released a statement against admitting Syrian refugees into Virginia. City leaders turned the situation into an opportunity to enlighten citizens about the importance of diversity and inclusion by inviting actor/activist George Takei to visit Roanoke in May 2016, to speak about the over-reaction to the presence of Japanese-Americans during World War II. Melinda Mayo and Timothy Martin will offer a behind-the-scenes look at how the city responded to this crisis, and share the positive outcomes that resulted. This event was recognized by the PRSA Blue Ridge Chapter with a 2016 Gold Summit Award in crisis and issues management, and by the Virginia Public Relations Awards with a 2017 Commonwealth Award of Excellence for the crisis communication.
