The Promise & Perils of Political Polling

Political polling can aid in expanding a college’s name recognition (e.g., Quinnipiac and Monmouth), but it can also present some issues for the pollster and for Public Relations. What do you do when you get some unexpected results? How do you handle the almost inevitable criticism, legitimate or otherwise? Dr. Harry Wilson has been the director of the Institute for Policy and Opinion Research (IPOR) at Roanoke College since 1991. There have been growing pains as IPOR has evolved from a survey center that conducted one face-to-face poll each year to a full service telephone survey center, and Wilson remains convinced of IPOR’s role as an important asset for the College.
